Getting read for the Bridge Walk

Every year in Charleston, they have a 10K run called the Cooper River Bridge Run.  I have registered and this is the first time in my life I will participate in anything like this.

The event is April 2, so I need to train for it. Today, with my good friend Kathy, I walked over the bridge and back, plus another 2 miles back and forth from the end of the bridge to have lunch. Good times.  Thanks Kathy!

It's The Little Things

Every once in awhile, I am reminded how glorious it is to have lost a good amount of weight.  Today, at the gym while working out, I needed to get down on the floor to lift weights.

I was able to get down on the floor and get back up, unassisted, without thinking anything of it.

That wouldn't have happened 8 months ago.

It's the little things.

Yes, you CAN do it...

Whenever I am working out, or out walking, I often get "the look" from people.

Here's what the look says: "I wish I could do that."

The reality is you CAN do it.  I know getting on top of your health, watching your weight and getting some exercise seems impossible....it did to me for a lot of years.  But it's really not.

All you have to do is get started.  So give yourself a gift.  Starting tomorrow:

1.) Wake up early.

2.) Eat a really healthy breakfast.

3.) Pack your lunch.

4.) Promise yourself you'll get some kind of exercise tomorrow. It could be anything.  Take the stairs.  Park further away than you usually do.  Take a walk at lunch.

And then do it again and again...and again.  Why?  Because you're worth it.  To yourself. be good to your body.  You only get one.

Don't be like me....don't wait until you weigh 577 pounds and are laying on a table in the ER convinced you're going to die.

3.8 miles walked today

And boy do I feel it. Still, it's good to get back on the walking wagon. Anyone want to go walking with me? Shoot me an e-mail! 

Hitting the trail today

Today I am going out today on my favorite walking trail: The Sawmill-Branch Trail in Summerville, South Carolina. More info here

It's about 6 miles each way through the middle of Summerville with parking available in certain points.  Since I can't yet walk 12 miles, my strategy is to park in the middle to allow for breaks and the ability to walk shorter distances.

Also critical is a very good music selection.  I need upbeat, fast-moving music to keep me going.  This is where iTunes comes in handy!

A healthy lifestyle not just about diet and exercise

I read somewhere once that if you take control of one area of your life, that soon other areas will follow.

For instance. Taking control of my weight has allowed me to see more clearly what I needed to do in the areas of finance and personal relationships.

I think a person can apply the same discipline and planning to their health, finances and social life the same. Isn't it interesting how all that works?  It's the same thing...getting rid of the bad, including more of the good and planning more.

415

Weighed today, came in at 415. A few observations:

I've been sick for a couple weeks, plus I went on a trip out of state. Took me out of my element. So weight loss has slowed.  Here is what I will need to do to get it to take back off like a rocket:

Exercise, exercise, exercise. I'm still eating about 2,400 calories a day, maybe a little more. I don't think I need to eat less, just work out more.

For 2011, I'd like to average 10 pounds a month lost. Onward and upward!

The first restaurant

So I have yet to eat out at a restaurant in 2011. As a matter of fact, I haven't dined out since 6/19/2010.  Assuming I will eventually find myself in a restaurant...where should I go?

Applebee's is running commercials for their "under 550 calorie" meals.  This sounds about right.

A quick check of the nutritional information on Applebee's website shows pretty decent numbers. Less than 550 calories, low in fat.  But like anything, sodium is the monster. The lowest sodium is the Asiago Peppercorn Steak at 1,520mg of sodium.  The highest? Teriyaki Shrimp pasta: 3,250mg.

Why so much salt, Applebee's?  Anybody have any better restaurant selections?

A trip through the Drive-thru

Today while filling up my car at the gas station, I got a big whiff of the french fries cooking at the McDonald's next to the gas station.

It got me to thinking.

I used to go to that McDonald's every day after work. What was I really eating? Let's add it up.

On an average visit:

1 Big Mac 540 calories

1 McChicken 360 calories

Super sized Fry 500 calories

Large Diet Coke 0 calories

2 Apple pies 500 calories


Total calories: 1900.  That's about what I eat in a day. The worst part? The McDonald's food was never that filling. I was always eating more a few hours later.

And you know what? I don't even blame McDonald's. They have their nutrition information widely available...some of it even printed on their wrappers. They make no secret about the food they sell.

At the end of the day, it is up to us what we eat.  How much, how often, the portion size, etc.

Eating on the Road

I recently went on a road trip for a few days and had to find a way stay on track with my food consumption.  As you probably know, there are so many temptations and pitfalls when traveling by car.  For instance:

--Fast food everywhere.  Any possible food item you could want, right next to the Interstate highway.  This is incredibly tempting. 

--Convenience stores/gas stations. Again, surrounded by junk food.

How I dealt with it:

--Grocery stores became my "restaurant."  I would stop in, load up my cooler with various food items. This gave me plenty of food for the road, but also serviced my desire to stop and get something.

--Had dinner with great friends who made a very healthy meal.

--I allowed myself to eat.  I wasn't writing anything down on the trip...I just ate whenever I felt like I needed food.

All in all, preparation is key.  Like everything, it's a lot of work to eat right and much easier and cheaper to eat junk food.
