Today I had the joy of walking 4 miles with my good friend Dawn.  I have finally learned that I need to stop sunburning my head....so for the occasion today, I broke out a Toronto Blue Jays hat.

9 months ago today

It was 9 months ago today...June 20, 2010, to be exact, when I had my brush with death.


I knew laying in the hospital for a week that things were going to have to change. I just didn't realize how much they were going to change.

You hear people say it time and time again...but my friends, believe it.  Anything is possible.  You can do it.

Weigh-in today: 401.5.

Weighed in today, 401.5.

Some observations:

-At this point, I am losing weight at the rate of 2 1/2 pounds a week, 10 pounds a month. This is somewhat of a slowdown, but I am fine with it. The lean muscle mass I am adding from lifting weights is making a real difference, but also adding some weight. Lifting weights is something that is new for me, and I like it.

-I went to the doctor today. My fasting blood sugar is 83.  This is the lowest that has been in 12 years.  9 months ago, I was pre-diabetic and well on my way to having to start taking insulin shots.

Now I don't even have to think about it.

My new restaurant

For the first time in 9 months, I have taken my first foray into eating out. But not where you think.

For a long time, I have been eating in at grocery stores, many of which have a dining area. Or in the case of one grocery store here in Charleston, SC, they have a Starbucks with a sitting area.

But I have discovered the grocery deli.  Turns out many stores will make sub sandwiches, along the lines of Subway, but with healthier ingredients. At many grocery delis, they use Boar's Head Oven Gold turkey or offer Lower Sodium meats upon request.

The Boar's Head Oven Gold Turkey Breast has 350mg of sodium per serving, which is much lower than the 920mg of sodium in Subway's 6" turkey sub. Even if there's 2 servings of turkey on the grocery sub, you're still doing better.

So check out your local grocery store. You can get a sub, a fruit bowl, yogurt...anything you want. It's a grocery store!

Commentary: weight loss shows

Time to "weigh in" (no pun intended) on all of these shows about the overweight.

At the outset, I want to say that TV networks are free to produce whatever shows they want and they obviously wouldn't be making shows about heavy people if there wasn't an audience for it.

That said, I won't be watching any of them.  I have never seen The Biggest Loser, Heavy, Too Fat for 15, etc.  Why?

I don't believe somebody's deep, personal struggle with food belongs on TV.  Does all human misery have to be televised?  In some ways, I think these shows trivialize obesity. 

Whoever can lose the most weight from one week to the next means nothing.  How about a show called "The Biggest Keeper Offer?"  That is the *real* struggle and challenge with weight loss.  Who can keep it off the longest.  Any dummy can lose weight.  How about losing that weight and coming back on TV in 10 years and stepping on the scale?

I don't know where I read this, but somebody had it right: it's not about weight loss, it's about weight control.  Very true.

As for these shows....not everything has to be on TV.  It really doesn't.

Weighing in

I weighed in yesterday. The number: 407.  To date, I have been able to lose 170 pounds.

Some thoughts:

It's not coming off as fast as I'd like. Right now, I'm at an average of 2.5 pounds a week.  At that rate, I'm looking at it taking 2 more years to get to my goal of 200.  I guess that's not too big of a deal, but sooner would be nice, wouldn't it?

So, I have 2 choices:

1.) Eat less

2.) Exercise more.

I could always eat less, but I have to be cautious there. I don't want to upset the apple cart. There is the old saying that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

So I'll be amping up the exercise. I walked 4.2 miles yesterday and am going to keep doing that more often.

I really can't complain.  I have a much better life now and it's only going to get better.  I can buy clothes at the store.  I can fit in my car.  I can walk long distances.  I can tie my shoes.  I have so much more energy.  Life is good!
